When does lavender bloom?

Flowering usually runs from mid-June to mid-July, peaking around late June and early July. It varies each year with spring weather and altitude: lowland fields bloom first, plateau fields later.

Harvesting often starts in mid-July. For the best views, aim for the last weeks of June and the first half of July, early in the morning or late in the day.

Sénanque Abbey, near Gordes

The classic postcard: the Cistercian abbey in its valley behind a lavender field, just above Gordes, about 35 minutes' drive from the house. It is still a working monastery, so visit quietly and arrive early.

The Sault plateau and the Luberon fields

Further north-east, the Sault area is the heart of lavender country in the Vaucluse, with Mont Ventoux as a backdrop — about 1 h 15 by car, easily combined with Roussillon and its ochres.

Within the Luberon itself you will pass many fields along the back roads around Gordes, Murs or Lagarde-d'Apt. Simply stop at the roadside and stay on the paths.

The Valensole plateau

In the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the Valensole plateau has the largest stretches of lavandin, often next to wheat or sunflower fields. It is about 1 h 30 from Cavaillon: a full day out, ideal for photographers.
