Exploring the Fortress of Les Baux-de-Provence

A visit to Les Baux-de-Provence is a journey into the medieval past of the Alpilles. The village is perched on a rocky outcrop, crowned by the ruins of a massive castle. Walking through its narrow streets, you will find artisan shops, small galleries, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the Val d'Enfer. The castle itself offers historical demonstrations, including the use of giant trebuchets, which is often a highlight for families.

The village is entirely pedestrian, so be prepared for a bit of a climb. The effort is rewarded by panoramic views that stretch all the way to the Mediterranean on a clear day. Because the site is very popular, staying at Les Toiles Blanches allows you to enjoy a full day trip without feeling rushed, returning to the quiet of your garden in Cavaillon by late afternoon.

The Carrières des Lumières Experience

Just below the village of Les Baux lies the Carrières des Lumières. These former limestone quarries have been transformed into a monumental art space where digital exhibitions are projected onto the towering stone walls. It is a cool, immersive experience that provides a welcome break from the Provençal sun. The themes change annually, often focusing on great masters like Van Gogh, Picasso, or Monet.

Combining a visit to the quarries with the village and the castle makes for a comprehensive day out. The site is approximately 45 minutes from our house, making it an easy drive through the scenic roads of the Alpilles, passing through olive groves and vineyards that produce some of the best olive oil and AOC wines in France.

A Base in Cavaillon for Your Alpilles Adventures Lake

While Les Baux-de-Provence is a highlight, the surrounding Alpilles region has much more to offer. Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is located on the way to Les Baux, roughly 30 minutes from our house. You can visit the Roman ruins of Glanum or the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole monastery where Van Gogh stayed. The landscape here is distinct from the Luberon, characterized by white limestone peaks and silver-green olive trees.

Les Toiles Blanches provides a central location that bridges the gap between the Luberon and the Alpilles. After a day of exploring the rugged terrain of Les Baux, you can return to the comfort of a 3-bedroom house with a large covered terrace.

Comfort and Relaxation at Les Toiles Blanches

Our house is designed for groups of up to 7 people, offering enough space for everyone to find their own corner. The garden, planted with cypresses and olive trees, reflects the very landscapes you will see in the Alpilles. The outdoor lounge is the ideal spot to unwind with a glass of local wine after a day of sightseeing. You can use the barbecue to prepare a meal and enjoy it at the large table on the covered terrace.

Parking is never an issue at Les Toiles Blanches. We have a large gravel courtyard that can easily accommodate up to 6 cars. This is particularly useful for groups travelling in multiple vehicles who want to explore different parts of Provence independently. Direct booking with us ensures you get the best information for your stay.

Practical Tips for Visiting the Region

We recommend visiting Les Baux-de-Provence early in the morning, especially during the summer months, to enjoy the village before the midday heat. The drive from Cavaillon is straightforward, taking you through the heart of the Provencal countryside. For those arriving by train or air, the house is about 30 minutes from Avignon TGV and 50 minutes from Marseille Airport.

From the heights of Les Baux to the antique markets of the Sorgue valley, the best of Provence is within reach. We look forward to welcoming you to our corner of the Luberon.
